Thousand-miler: adventures hiking the ice age trail

September-October is a peak time to thru hike according to the guidebook. Plan more frequent water stops accordingly. Be prepared to sweat a lot and contend with lots of insect bites. This is not the most comfortable time to thru-hike, or even multi-day backpack. In the south parts, you have to reserve a shelter or a campground site. There are a lot of road miles because right of ways being negotiated, land being acquired, and trail being built out. I think the biggest draw backs are the number of miles that are still connector roads and in the southern parts of the trail (think roughly south of horizontal line through Baraboo) there is little to no dispersed camping. I've read that most of the trail has similar abundance. Water sources are for the most part abundant all through the Kettle Moraine State Forest and from what I've seen of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, and other areas I've hiked. It is a beautiful trail with a lot to see. I've not thru hiked the whole thing, but I've backpacked and day hiked a few hundred miles of it.
